What is FR4?

FR4 (or FR-4) is a flame-retardant glass-reinforced epoxy laminate used widely in electrical and mechanical applications. The name “FR4” refers to a material grade defined by NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association), where “FR” stands for flame retardant, and “4” indicates it meets certain standards for flame resistance and performance.

FR4 is closely related to G10, with the key distinction being flame retardancy: FR4 meets UL94 V-0 standards, making it a fire-retardant version of G10. Because of this, FR4 can be safely substituted in most applications where G10 is specified.
