Pros and Cons of PVC Injection Molding

Pros:

  1. Cost-effective
  2. Versatile (flexible and rigid parts)
  3. Recyclable material
  4. High precision and consistency
  5. Fast production and short cycle times

Cons:

  1. Limited high-temperature resistance (softens around 80-85°C)
  2. Can be brittle, especially rigid PVC
  3. Releases harmful chemicals when burned or improperly disposed of

PVC Injection Molding Processing Guide

PVC is hygroscopic and can absorb moisture, so PVC granules must be dried before injection molding. The drying temperature should be controlled between 75-90°C to remove absorbed moisture. Mold temperature is typically maintained between 21°C and 38°C to achieve optimal results without defects.

Injection pressure should be set between 20-40% of the machine’s maximum pressure.

What is PVC?

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a versatile and widely used synthetic plastic polymer. It is made from polymerizing vinyl chloride monomers and is available in two main forms: rigid and flexible.

PVC is known for its durability, chemical resistance, low cost, and versatility. It can withstand environmental stress, is resistant to acids, alkalis, and oils, and can be easily molded into a variety of shapes and sizes.

PVC Parts Applications

Common applications include:

  • Piping
  • Medical tubing
  • Window profiles
  • Flooring
  • Electrical cable insulation
  • Packaging materials
  • Automotive interior trims
  • Credit cards
  • Toys
  • Containers
