Silicone Injection Molding Design Tips
Undercuts: Minimize undercuts to reduce mold complexity and tooling costs. Consider using pass-thru coring to simplify part ejection.
Wall Thickness: Keep wall thickness consistent to avoid sink marks and voids. Thinner walls (0.5 mm to 3 mm) help reduce cycle time and costs.
Draft Angles: Include a minimum draft angle of 0.5° to 5° to facilitate part ejection, especially for textured surfaces that may require the higher end of this range.
Bosses: Design bosses to be 30% of the wall thickness in depth with a 30% edge groove for added strength. Attach them to side walls or ribs for better structural support.
Gate Location: Position gates in areas that minimize flow imbalance and stress concentration. Typically, use the “cold runner” system for better control of material flow and part consistency.
Ribs/Gussets: Ribs should be 40-60% of the wall thickness. Apply draft angles to ribs and gussets for easier ejection and reduced stress on the mold.
Metering and Mixing: Unlike thermoplastics, liquid silicone requires precise metering and mixing of its components (one containing platinum catalyst).
About Silicone Injection Molding FAQs
Silicone injection molding is a manufacturing process where liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is injected into a mold to create precise, durable parts.
LSR injection molding starts with creating a high-temperature tool using CNC machining. The tool is then loaded into an LSR-specific press, which controls shot size for consistent parts. LSR, a thermosetting polymer, cannot be re-melted once molded.Once the parts are injected and cooled, they are removed from the mold and can be used as prototypes or in production.
