Surface Finishing

As Machined Services

Parts machined to a surface roughness of Ra 3.2μm / Ra 126μin can achieve a conventional finish without the need for high-end tools or machinery. Brushed finishes are allowed for standard material plates.

Appearance Goals
The part may feel slightly rough but should not have sharp edges or burrs. Machining marks should appear consistent but visible. Tool marks may appear as long as roughness is within specification and there are no large scratches.

Target Values
Surface roughness (according to ISO4287:1997):

  • The arithmetic average deviation of the profile (Ra) should not exceed Ra 3.2μm.
  • The maximum height of the profile (Rz) should not exceed 20μm.
  • Scratches: The maximum allowable scratch size is 2 mm x 2 mm x 0.1 mm.

Processes: Milling (conventional or CNC), Grinding/Polishing, Turning (conventional or CNC), Electrical Discharge Machining (up to VDI 30), Wire EDM.
